Here’s an easy way to give a lift to everyday meals like lab stew. Serve them with good old-fashioned corn bread! It makes something special out of any weekday meal.

Easy to make one bowl recipe serves nine.

Old fashioned corn bread

1 cup Quaker Yellow Corn Meal
1 cup sifted enriched flour
1/4 cup sugar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk
1/4 cup shortening, soft

Sift dry ingredients into medium-sized bowl. Add egg, milk and shortening. Beat with rotary egg beater until smooth, about 1 minute. Bake in greased 8-inch square pan in hot oven (425 degrees F.) 20-25 minutes. Cut into squares and serve piping hot.

Here’s a breakfast treat from the Old South your family will love! (serves 6)

1 cup Quaker Corn Meal
1/2 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
1 1/4 cups buttermilk

Sift together dry ingredients. Add beaten egg and buttermilk to dry ingredients, beating until smooth. Pour 1 tablespoon of batter for each cake onto a well-greased skillet. Bake until brown, turning only once. (If batter gets too thick, add a little more buttermilk.) Serve with maple syrup or molasses.
