When I was my oldest daughter’s age, we got a microwave oven. It was a big deal. Not like now where most every household has one. None of my friends had one yet. And I was not allowed to ever, ever use it. haha. It was huge and weighed a ton.

It strikes me as funny that getting a microwave was like getting a brand new car. Everyone wanted to come over to see it.

And now in my house, I only use the microwave to make popcorn and ramen and the occasional re-heating of leftovers. I don’t see anyone lining up to see that. My kids use it daily, too.

We were one of the first of my friends to get cable TV, too. When MTV first started, I was my daughter’s age and they barely had ANY videos from bands. Some of the first videos I saw were by Pat Benatar, The Cars, Blondie and Reo Speedwagon. I remember the song Video Killed The Radio Star playing over and over (Loved that they had this song in the movie Take This Waltz). And some songs played without a video and in between videos, it would just be black or some graphics before the next video played. And they had VJ’s (like dj’s but for videos). Which was your favorite VJ? I liked Martha Quinn, but a lot of people thought she was annoying. My least favorite was Daisy Fuentes, but that was in the 90’s anyway.

Now MTV barely even plays music.

I used to watch American Bandstand and Solid Gold, too. haha. I remember Madonna’s and the Go-Go’s performances probably the most. But when I just watched a couple of their old videos on youtube, I can’t believe my mother ever allowed it. I guess she picked her battles. haha. I’ll share more about TV shows another time.

Anyway, I think it’s memories like these that encouraged me to let my kids enjoy technology at a younger age than I initially planned to. I guess I’m picking my battles, too.

And for those that love lyrics:

I heard you on my wireless back in ’52
Lyin’ awake intent on tuning in on you
If I was young it didn’t stop you coming through
oh-a-oh
They took the credit for your second symphony
Rewritten by machine on new technology
And now I understand the supernova scene
oh-a-oh
I met your children
oh-a-oh
What did you tell them?
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Pictures came and broke your heart,
we can’t rewind we’ve gone too far
Whoa!
Oh – aoh – oh – oh – oh
Oh – aoh – oh – oh – oh
And now we meet in an abandoned studio
You hear the playback and it seems so long ago
And you remember, the jingles used to go,
oh-a-oh
You were the first one
oh-a-oh
You were the last one
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Pictures came and broke your heart,
we can’t rewind we’ve gone too far
Too far!
Oh – aoh – oh – oh – oh
Oh – aoh – oh – oh – oh
Alright
Video killed the radio star
Video killed the radio star
Pictures came and broke your heart,
We can’t rewind we’ve gone too far
Pictures came and broke your heart
Put all the blame on VCR
You are… the radio star [x2]
Video killed the radio star [x7]
Video killed that radio star, yes it did
