How to clean a brass table?

What is the best way to clean and polish a brass coffee table that has been in storage for many years? I have tried soapy water with a soft cloth, but it barely brought up a shine (per advise from a hardware store owner).  It is a beautiful piece, almost 20+ years old. I would be grateful for any help you can offer. Thank you!
